chapter 2 the fighter

chapter 2
joe oreilly was a potato farmer. He son chris  age 12 worked with him daily.
Cultivating the potatoes was a hard job.  
Joe walked imto the kitchen where his wife josephine was cooking potatoes and corn beef.
The aroma was spread all over the house. Joe was sweating and had a worried look on his face. Josephine the potatos are in ruins. They have all rotted.
Joe did not have much money saved. He had enough though to send his son Chris to America. Chris was reluctant to go. But had to follow the orders of his father.
The ship was full of people heading to America. Chris had $2 in his pocket and a small suitcase of clothes and the bible. He missed his family . And started to cry as the ship
headed off into the ocean. It was crammed and the smell was terrible. After several days
Chris met a young girl. Her name was Margaret.
 Shyly he introduced himself.
They started to talk and enjoyed each others company. Chris did not notice the long journey since he met his new friend.
      The ship landed in New York City.  Margaret and Chris got off together.
They had to endure hours of phsical examinations. They were assigned a low class of citizenship.
Chris had no where to stay, his plan was to work in a shop for food and shelter.
Margaret also did not have a place to stay. She also had the same plan.
So they looked together. They agreed on a story that they were sister and brother and had lost their parents in an accident and were homeless. They found a domestic job
caring for the very young children of a well to do Irish Family in NYC
They worked hard. cleaning, cooking, etc. they were treated like servants. but had a roof over their head and food. 
They worked their for  6 years until chris found another job working in the loading docks.
Margaret and chris lived in an apt on the lower east side.
They married and had a son Tim. 
Tim Oriely was a tough kid. He always got into fights.  He loved boxing and started 
making money illegaly by fighting in gambling  places.  He always won. He made good money and was able to make a comfortable living at it.
  Tim fought until he was 25. He hurt his hands after one fight. He could not punch without excrutiating pain. Devastated that he could not box anymore Tim had to look for another job and found one working for a butcher .It was a tough job. His boss was jewish and Tim 
felt he was underpaid. He always would curse to himself. Cheap jew.
He was exhausted after the day. Tim at night always went to the local Irish pub and had a few beers. He soon met his wife Adaline. Adaline soon 
 gave birth to Kelly Orielly.
